Who is Jesus?

“And Jesus asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’
Peter answered him, ‘You are the Christ.’”
(Gospel of Mark chapter 8 verse 29)

Maybe you heard about Jesus as you were growing up? Maybe from your parents, or from school chapel, or from a friend? Maybe you were invited to a church youth group or camp? Maybe you know very little about Jesus?

But now you’re an adult studying at uni, why not consider the claims of Jesus afresh?

The apostle Paul would state in his letter to the church at Corinth, Greece:

”For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time….” (1 Corinthians chapter15 verses 3-6)

Paul’s claim is that the man Jesus, who was born some 2,000 years ago, is the promised Jewish Christ, the anointed saviour king. Jesus comes declaring that the Kingdom of God had arrived and all people must repent of their sins and believe in Him. During his life Jesus points people to God through His teaching and miracles.

Paul declares that Jesus, having been put to death was crucified and died. He was buried in a tomb, but God raised Jesus to life three days later. Jesus appeared to many in physical bodily form - many who then became eyewitness to His resurrection.

In His death and resurrection Jesus offers forgiveness for our sin. In raising Jesus to life, God establishes Him as the Lord (ruler) of the world and the judge of all people. For those whose sins are forgiven they have passed from being under judgement to receive eternal life. For those whose sin remains un-forgiven they will suffer eternal judgement.

In trusting Jesus we are declared forgiven, righteous before God, and adopted back into God’s family - we are His children. Followers of Jesus (Christians) are those people who have accepted that Jesus is both their Lord and Christ. Christians live as people awaiting the return of King Jesus - and living in a way now that seeks to bring Him honour and glory.
